On any given day of this summer, you may spot a mysterious flash of smile and colour that is Joel Wynn Rees. Joel jives to rhythms that many people might mistake for birds singing or waves crashing. With a backpack full of heart and a heart full of gold, Joel likes to climb that extra rung and go that extra mile all the while humming to himself “carpe diem, carpe diem, carpe diem…”
Joel’s earlier years were spent in Broome fishing with wild dogs and diving for pearls before he made his way south to Perth where he became the grooving bassist of a little-known (but grossly underestimated) outfit, called The Sponge Puppets. These days Joel has dropped anchor in Melbourne where photography is his mainstay but by no means his only lover.
In this exhibition of images, which was chosen from a large body of work shot on film over the past two months, Joel pursues the familiar and peripheral elements of a summer in the west-coast capital. The uncanny moments, the barrenness, and an appreciation of the magic of the ocean are carefully captured in these quality colour photographs. The work suggests that simple things can often be the most mysterious.
